Toms description of consciousness is that it is a information system, A data field, He says consciousness is information. To me that seems accurate but incomplete, My view is, That the stuff that we really are is where the (data) information comes from, Arises from naturally. Data can not perceive data, That data is what gives us awareness and the ability to become more, We use it to become more like nutrition for biology, It grows us, I know we cant know some things in our present state of evolution, But it does seem like to me we can be more precise and accurate in describing the fundamental reality. This sounds like an issue that 30+ years of exploring the larger reality might resolve ;)
I am being playful, but I really do think that the only way to understand "consciousness" (to any degree beyond intelectual musings) is by exploring and studying it first hand. Tom's model (being a completely subjective interpretation of data - though perhaps a pretty darn accurate interpretation) should feel incomplete in some areas; that is unless we have the exact same past histories and experiences as the data that currently equates to "Tom".
So, also use the search function within self. Self is the one thing that you know (to a high degree of certainty) to be conscious. MBT is more like a guidebook than a textbook in this way.
My limited an humble opinion.
