There is too much emotion attached to those three specific letters (in this language) put together in that order with the first one capitalized that is absolutely tied in with long standing cultural belief systems for that word with all the emotions attached to it to do anything but pacify those clinging to it because they are too afraid to think for themselves, and that truly believe they are better than someone that does not buy into that belief system.
I was thinking about that joke I like, this one.
Did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac? "No, no I didn't hear about that, what about it?" Yeah well, this person sat up all night pondering the existence of Dog.
It isn't the word god that is so problematic, it is the history of the concept of God that makes it only good for talking about one of three specific religious belief systems in our cultural. All the dogma associated with it make the term limited, especially when one really sees what a limiting concept it is.
I do feel that people that really can not see beyond that belief system to the point of thinking they are not responsible for their actions, that they can recite some words, or pay a penance, and be "forgiven" of what is in most cases just breaking a social norm, and not a "sin" in the big picture where manipulating an other absolute free will for your own selfish profit or pleasure is the only thing remotely sinful, other than not protecting someone with less decision space from being manipulated, they may have some reason to be watched out for too. Obviously they may also be more easily manipulated, and need some protection as well if they are just blind, and not blind and dangerous. In addition to those using that belief system to use others who are not blind, and dangerous who society needs some information and protection on and from, respectfully.
