Lets take this to the next level. If we were to create a computer simulated reality in order to study consciousness evolution. We might begin with a single AI guy (or FWAU) and he would need a construct to serve as an interactive environment that changes and (grows)
Then we would need to populate this simulation with many AI guys (and AI girls) and allow them to interact and evolve.
We might then simply use the same formula to create many FWAUs and thru interaction with each other and their environment they would develope unique variations in apearance, demeanor, and awareness.
Theoretically, these AI people could evolve to the point where they might want to create a simulated environment for the purpose of studying consciousness. worlds within worlds, systems within systems

How far does the fractal system go?
where in this fractal hierarchy do we stand?
How deep IS the rabbit hole?

Lena -- I agree with you in terms of metaphors. What made me interested in this was the implication of an actual "physical" follow up, which made me think that in that particular instance, there may have been a bit more to his experience...but maybe not.

kroeran -- And I agree with you as well; I'd assume backups would come into play when a significant mission is undertaken (which would make it likely that Tom would have a back up.) so...I am pretty sure, I am solo this time around :-)

Patrick putting that initial AI guy (deity) in there to set stuff up in not required, in my opinion.

The initial AI guy was not meant to represent deity so much as the pattern for the creation of more AI guys to populate the construct

Also,
the AI guy doesnt know he is just digital information (data).
he doesnt know he is living in a simulated digital virtual reality experiment (more data)
he doesnt know he is interacting with other digital copies of himself (also data)
and he doesnt know he was created by other units of digital information (data creates data)

He sounds like hes in the same boat as me.
