I did a quick search to see if my thought wasn't already discussed, but couldn't find anything (although this seems to be a pretty basic idea to me, so it must have been given thought to at one point or another - maybe in the books...).

Here goes...

When we record a video, we can play it back later and watch (and listen to) the events again, but through the 'eye of the camera'.
The camera recorded the same things as we did at the time, but hardly distorts the material, unlike the brain.
In this way, the camera is just an extension of our brain that can store a mostly undistorted version of any experienced event.

However... we can also create a new experience of reality with the very same images that were recorded.
A reality that has never existed (to our knowledge) or isn't even possible physically.
For example, by simply playing the video in reverse.
It is physically impossible for us to do this ourselves, yet if we have recorded ourselves walking forward, we can witness ourselves walking backwards too; something that has never happened in real life, nor will.
We can also watch spilled milk travel from the floor back to the cup. Same idea.

We perceive all these images as very real, which means that we can not only re-experience any experience (minus smell, tactile sensations etc), but we can also alter that previous experience to a new one.
We have no way to discern recorded reality from our own moment-to-moment reality, other than that it 'feels' different, because we don't look at the content of the experience directly through our senses, but through the senses that perceive a tool that has recorded the event of life for us.

But just because we are watching it through a tool that has recorded things for us, doesn't mean it's less real.

Any thoughts on this?

Better yet... it can lead to other interesting thoughts. ;)

Like:

It seems to me, that if we can watch spilled milk travel back from the floor to the cup - something that will never be possible in actual experience, but apparently is possible in our experience of 'recorded reality' - it should tell us something about the nature of our moment-to-moment reality, because it's all real, isn't it?

Or could we say that recorded reality is 'just' a dream within a dream? ;)
