The Long Road Ahead: A Fukushima Policeman Talks About Life After the Disaster in Japan

- -

EDITOR'S note:
THIS letter, written by Ha Minh Thanh Vietnamese Immigrant working in Fukushima as a policeman to a friend in Vietnam, was posted on New America Media on March 19. It is a testimonial to the strength of the Japanese spirit, and an interesting slice of life near the epicenter of Japan's crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. It was translated by NAM editor Andrew Lam, author of "East eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres." Shanghai Daily condensed it.

Brother,

How are you and your family? These last few days, everything was in chaos. When I close my eyes, I see dead bodies. When I open my eyes, I also see dead bodies.
Each one of us must work 20 hours a day, yet I wish there were 48 hours in the day, so that we continue Could Helping and rescuing folks.

We are without water and electricity, and food rations are near zero. We barely manage to move Refugees BEFORE there are new orders to move Check it elsewhere.

I am currently in Fukushima, about 25 kilometers away from the nuclear power plant. I have so much to tell you that if I Could write it all down, it would surely turn into a novel about h uma n Relationships and behaviors during times of crisis.

People here jocko calm - THEIR sense of Dignity and proper behavior are very good - so things Sonny aren't as bad as could be. But given another week, I can not guarantee that things will not get to a point where we can no longer provide proper protection and order.

Sonny h uma ns are after all, and When hunger and thirst override Dignity, well, Sonny will do whatever They have to do. The government is trying to provide supplies by water, Bringing in food and medicine, but it's like dropping a little salt into the ocean.

Brother, there was a really moving incident. It involves a little Japanese boy who taught an adult like me a lesson on how to behave like ah uma n being.Last night, I was sent to a little grammar school to help a charity organization Distribute food to the Refugees. It was a long line that snaked this way and that and I saw a little boy around 9 years old. He was Wearing a T-shirt and a pair of shorts.

It was getting very cold and the waiter was at the very end of the line. I was worried that by the time his turn CAME would not be there any food left. So I spoke to him. He said he was at school When the earthquake happened. His father worked nearby and was driving to the school. The boy was on the third floor balcony When he saw the tsunami sweep away his father's car.

I asked him about his mother. He said his house is right by the beach and that his mother and little sister probably did not make it. He turned his head and wiped his disorders When I asked about his relatives.

The boy was shivering so I took off my jacket and police put it on him. That's When my bag fell out of a food ration. I picked it up and gave it to him. "When it comes to your turn, Sonny MIGHT run out of food. So here's my portion. I already ATE. Why do not you eat it?"

The waiter took my food and bowed. I thought he would eat it right away, but he did not. He took the bag of food, went up to where the line ended and put it where all the food was waiting to be distributed.

I was Shocked. I asked him why he did not eat it and instead added it to the food Pile.
He answered: "Because I see a lot more people hungrier than I am. If I put it there, then Sonny will Distribute the food equally."
When I heard that I turned away so that people would not see me cry.

A society that can produce a 9-year-old who understands the concept of sacrifice for the Greater good must be a great society, a great people.

Well, a few lines to send you and your family my warm Wishes. The hours of my shift have begun again.

Perhaps some of you who have been asking, what is our task and what do we do when we graduate have your answers here. The policeman is mistaken to attribute it to the Japanese culture, although that no doubt provided a framework. It is more probably the Quality of Consciousness of the child who is after all, not a child, but at base perhaps a very well developed IUOC who 'knows where his towel is' as in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Taking on the task of helping others develop their own QoC and lower their entropy.

It touches the heart to hear stories such as this. And it saddens the heart to think that the american media is paying no attention. being fully absorbed in the selfish pursuit of self

This boy is an old and wise IUOC. It is a heart touching story, and it gives all of us a perpective what is Love, a simple and quite not pretentious move of a little boy. To me one of Love's true colors is dignity, real dignity, that can be recognized by anyone. QOC of this policeman is not an ordinary one too. I have no doubt, that his QOC jumped up several lifes up after this encounter.

Which answers the age old question of why this sort of thing happens.

I watched yesterday a Japanese movie, Kabei: Our mother http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kabei_our_mother/. It shows Japanese culture before WWII.

From The Economist:

Hot spots and blind spots
The mounting human costs of Japan’s nuclear disaster

Oct 8th 2011 | IITATE | from the print edition

CREST the hill into the village of Iitate, and the reading on a radiation dosimeter surges eightfold—even with the car windows shut. “Don’t worry, I’ve been coming here for months and I’m still alive,” chuckles Chohei Sato, chief of the village council, as he rolls down the window and inhales cheerfully. He pulls off the road, gets out of the car and buries the dosimeter in the grass. The reading doubles again.

Iitate is located 45km (28 miles) from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant hit by a tsunami on March 11th this year. In the mountains above the town, the forests are turning the colour of autumn. But their beauty is deceptive. Every time a gust of wind blows, Mr Sato says it shakes invisible particles of radioactive caesium off the trees and showers them over the village. Radiation levels in the hills are so high that villagers dare not go near them. Mr Sato cannot bury his father’s bones, which he keeps in an urn in his abandoned farmhouse, because of the dangers of going up the hill to the graveyard.

Fukishima nuclear disaster is affecting the entire world community. Even if we don't see the efects here yet. But to the Japanese people it must look like the end of the world.

People of Japan had Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. A peat is as deep, as you think it is. Is the glass half empty or half full?

I was just thinking about this the other day. "It's always deeper than you think." "If you grow deeper it gets deeper." and yours; "it's only as deep as you think it is". i couldn't decide which one felt most right.

just to throw a different perspective on this, from a TOEian point of view, it could be argued that a quiet undisturbed life in suburban comfortville, may be the true disaster

Tom has said, death is no big deal, though I suppose, forming courageous intents, thinking its a big deal, is a big deal from a QoC point of view

then there is this:

"The issue of long-term effects of the Chernobyl disaster on civilians is very controversial. The number of people whose lives were affected by the disaster is enormous. Over 300,000 people were resettled because of the disaster; millions lived and continue to live in the contaminated area. On the other hand, most of those affected received relatively low doses of radiation; there is little evidence of increased mortality, cancers or birth defects among them; and when such evidence is present, existence of a causal link to radioactive contamination is uncertain."
