A new study has found that there are vastly more geothermal power resources here in the US than previously considered. http://www.tgdaily.com/sustainability-f ... tudy-shows
Quotations from this article:
Quote:
The US has the geothermal resources to produce ten times as much power as the current installed capacity of coal plants, Google-sponsored research shows.

In the past, geothermal production in the US has been restricted largely to the western third of the country, in tectonically active locations such as the Geysers Field north of San Francisco.

But Southern Methodist University says it's confirmed that the country has vast geothermal reserves that are realistically accessible using current technology, particularly in the eastern two-thirds of the country.
This could potentially resolve the question of contributing to increasing global temperatures based upon coal and petroleum usage here in the US releasing CO2 into the atmosphere and also the risks of 'fracking' to the environment. Of course, they can always 'screw it up' but one can always hope. We have Google to thank for sponsoring this research.

I'm generally skeptical on this topic.

I first came across the mention of the study in brief form, at the blog of someone who writes about energy and whose past and present vocation is in energy, Robert Rapier (R-squared). He's a chemical engineer by education but writes with the layman in mind as he is very concerned for his son's future and wishes his efforts to result in education.

The most positive thing I can say about this actually being done is it's generally something that only a government can do. The core problem that creates the motivation for even looking a this energy source, somewhat seriously, - finally - is the cost of energy, it's relation to it's economy-killing capacity coupled to the existing building stock.

There's a geothermal plant up the road that most employees carpool to from here owned by the MIC http://www.manta.com/c/mmpt1sr/halliburton. That doesn't bode well...

I don't see why it bodes any particular way, but
Olancha, CA sure seems barren to me.

I seem to have a real attachment to proliferation of trees. Even blues sky's all the time with no tree's seems harsh to me.

I lived there for a couple/few months when I was pregnant with the baby that was still born so it wasn't barren when I lived there. It's beautiful but not barren and is where the source for Crystal Geyser water is and a bottling plant for it. The boding is because Halliburton is involved so if there was any harm it would be covered up. They drill like fracking but then put cold water down to get the hot water back that they use to generate energy instead of fracturing the deep rock but it seems like cold water would crack it.

The bottling plant was one of the 'highlights' of the Google information I read. No mention of Halliburton on the Google pages, though.

Halliburton is doing geothermal as the link I provided shows and was a surprise to me actually. The water company is owned by a French company. I met and relaxed with the man who used to own the artisan well or whatever it is called when it was a pipe coming out of the ground with water bubbling up out of it at the edge of the dry lake bed that is Mono Lake with his shack house right there at the edge of the dry lake bed too. It was back in 1987 and all the picture from my youth and teens were last seen blowing across that dry lake bed back then although I can only hope they blew to the other side and some other people I met back then that lived over there have found them...

Look at the link I put for geothermal for the Cheney connection.

No I do. The one that ends with "Halliburton." Why?

I was trying to find more than just business addresses, is all. The geothermal company associated with that effort is listed as 1 to 4 people. I know Halliburton is huge and I was looking to connect some more dots.

I've read about Halliburton a lot in the crude oil links I read, so I know they are large and a major player in the MIC/government.

My main points in posting this were that we could run the country off of geothermal energy and second, that there are substantial geothermal energy resources in the Eastern 2/3 of the country, not just in the West. We could power the whole country off of geothermal resources and transmit the resulting electricity all around the country. We need not pollute with fly ash, CO2, a damaged ecology nor solid wastes and most especially no radioactive wastes to store for centuries. No doubt the big companies will remain with us. That is another matter entirely.
