Hey guys,

Is it going to be useful if I upload recent YouTube presentations of Tom's that have been extracted to Audio (mp3)?
If you don't have the time to sit and watch YouTube, it is possible to upload just the mp3 version to a player and multitask while listening to it. If anyone wants me to do this, I can upload the recent presentations, such as Calgary in the mp3 format that I have extracted.

This would be very useful. I am in the process of figuring out how and gathering information to put as many of Tom's presentations in whatever format they are available on the Wiki. Unfortunately we cannot just put those files directly on the Wiki, stored on the Wiki server, as I understand it. I tried to upload PDF files to the Wiki to list directly on a page for download and the upload would not occur. It was only willing to upload graphic type files which could be displayed on the page or downloaded without being displayed. Where did you plan to upload the files to?

I did exactly that just yesterday (extracted the audio from the Calgary presentations) and I have done it for other presentations as well.
Since there is not much to see I rather listen.
The process is simple, the audio is originally aac/m4a which any recent player can deal with as it is.
It just needs to be "ripped" from the video without any conversion and is very quick.
Converting to mp3 is better because really any player can play this - this takes a few minutes of time and computing power but is just as easy.

Question is: where to upload to?

I'm not familiar with how mediawiki is configured but I found this in their manual:

Another option would be a separate server (ftp...) and just setting links to it in the wiki.

Within MediaWiki a few configurations need to be set. MediaWiki should support these file formats, but some constraints need to be set, such as the maximum allowable upload size so that this can be possible. This is necessary because the mp3's are typcically around 50-150MB each for a good hour and a bit presentation by Tom.
Once this is done, uploads should be relatively easy. I will have a look into it, but expect that some default settings will need to be changed.

until the material can be made available via the wiki I would like to share what I have so far.
I kept the original titles mostly, the timeline ... should be about right.
It's all in variable bitrate mp3, should be no problem anywhere.
I've put this into my Dropbox-account - it should be accessible for anyone to download.

If such thing seems useful to have and you want to help raise my free storage-space there, drop me an email-address to which I'll send an invitation message.
As soon as you in turn open an account through that referral, my storage space will be grown 250 MB for each one up to 8 GB max.
All the files here currently take 97% of 2.25 GB.

It is possible to upload mp3's to the Wiki, but it basically requires re-installation of the entire wiki.
At present, the problem is that mp3 files are not enabled. As specified in:

These are enabled within the source code that is used to create MediaWiki.
Specifically they are a line of code that is specified in the localsettings.php file, with the line:

$wgFileExtensions = array('png','jpg','jpeg','ogg','doc','xls','ppt','mp3','sxc','pdf');

However you can't go straight into MediaWiki and make the changes. According to the Manual Installation Guide:

You need the following tools:

A web server
PhP (programming interface)
A database server

Yes it's possible, but requires re-configuration.
Might be much work and be risky - never touch a running system ;) (though I do it all the time with mine, but then its just me who stands in the debris...)
It looks as if the files would then not simply be a list, to choose and download from, but there would be an integrated player which presents those files. Not sure if that is so, it would make sense for a wiki. But that would not be very useful for someone who just wants to have the file, to put it on a player somewhere else.

Thank you so much. I haven't tried any of them yet but hope this clears my bandwidth restrictions my ISP puts on me issues as I haven't heard many of the videos after the London Lecture, and the Monroe ones and even the Hawaiian ones as well as the ones I was at. I had to edit when I went back to look at the list. My bandwidth issue is newer it seems.

For your information, the permitted file types for the MBT Wiki are now as follows:

Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, doc, xls, mpp, pdf, ppt, tiff, bmp, docx, xlsx, pptx, ps, odt, ods, odp, odg, mp3.

As you see, mp3 files are permitted.

The present size of the Wiki backup is roughly 105 MB, after compression, and full size on disk, I do not know. These mp3 files at 2.25 GB represents a great increase over that if all of these files, and more in the future, were added. I will consult and see what the best option is. It may well be to keep them on DropBox, but not necessarily on Jonathan's account, using up his capacity, but on one belonging to Tom or MBT Events and providing links on the Wiki to download them as users wish. I can't put them on my DropBox account as that is already being used to distribute BB and Wiki backups that I do nightly to Tom and Keith for safe geographical dispersion plus other services to the MBT community.

I will consult accordingly and advise you of the optimum course. Thank you for providing this valuable resource, Jonathan. One way or the other, these files will soon be available for download from or linked from the Wiki as a central point to provide access to them.

These files are accessible via that dropbox since February.
There is no need to rush transferring them elsewhere if the current option to download them does work.
I don't use or need that account - I have got another one.
The files may stay there indefinitely. It's basically dedicated to MBT. I will NOT remove or even touch them.

The only drawback is - as already mentioned:
this dropbox has reached it's capacity, I can't add any more (newer) files to it unless I get some more space added if and when someone decides to open an account there through my referral.
Just provide an e-mail address to which I'll send this referral and open your account by going through that referral.

Moving/copying them to the Wiki will increase the size of it and that of the Backup - but only once, if you do incremental backups (each time only record the changes to the previous backup ...).
