Susan: how does improving the quality of one's consciousness lower entropy?
Tom: Entropy is a measure of disorder. A system with more entropy is more random. The more randomness within a system, the less content that system can contain. Indeed, one definition of a random system is one with no content (all noise, no signal). One cannot have quality without organized content (lower entropy). The higher the quality of the organization of the bits within the system, the more content, meaning, or ability to do work i.e., affect things (lower entropy) the system has. Think of a car (the system) and all of its hundreds of parts (the data). If 90% of those parts are put together properly and 10% are just randomly attached somewhere, the car may work but would be of less quality (higher entropy) than if all the parts were in their proper place (better organized configuration of the system's parts)
This correlation between entropy and "quality" is true whether the system's content is evolving to lower entropy states on the positive side of consciousness development (toward becoming extemporaneous, non-conditional, open ended, in the moment, intention of love -- the essence of giving and caring) or lower entropy states on the negative side (negative "quality" means improved negative functionality) (toward control, power, force through fear -- the essence of self-focused taking) of consciousness development. The negative is limited by the entropy generating aspects of applying control, power, and force through fear.
The words don't lend themselves to describing the negative, but you see the symmetry -- both positive and negative gain power (ability to do work) through entropy reduction - one self-reinforcing, the other self-defeating. We don't discuss the negative side much in MBT so when we mention "increased quality" we just assume that we are talking about the positive side of consciousness evolution.
