A great deal of life turns on what you do
when you are overwhelmed with negative emotions.
A large part of socio economic difference, and
negative downward mobility, is tied
to this.
Buddhism invests a lot of attention on detaching
from negative emotions, observing them, laughing
at them, rather than allowing them to push
you into unsustainable behaviours.
Other cultures embrace profitable distractions.
Tom would draw attention to what fear might be at
the bottom of this.
When I am emotionally uncomfortable in the
absence of an obvious stressor, I ask myself,
- am I bored
- am I lonely
- is there an entropic social situation needing attention
- am I unexercised
- is my diet not good
- am I not managing practical responsibilities
- is my environment aesthetically stressing
- are there unresolved TOEian fears
A great deal of human misery is due to not
tracing the source stressor and rather hiding
from cures with vice
