Tom Campbell has appeared on numerous science and spirituality channels and podcasts to talk about the My Big TOE model of reality. He has also had many stimulating discussions and collaborations with other scientists and thinkers who, each from their own perspective, have also arrived at the conclusion that consciousness is fundamental to reality.

Conversations with Scientists

Prof. Donald D. Hoffman, Ph.D., University of Irvine, California

Donald Hoffman is a professor emeritus in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, with joint appointments in the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, and the School of Computer Science. Donald studies consciousness, visual perception and evolutionary psychology using mathematical models and psychophysical experiments. In his 2019 book “The Case Against Reality”, he argues that evolution has shaped living organisms such that they do not necessarily perceive the external world as it really is. This “interface theory of perception” led him to a metaphysical view he calls “conscious realism”, which holds that consciousness is the primary reality from which the physical world emerges.

Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D., Stem Cell Biologist

Bruce Lipton focused his early work on the molecular mechanisms controlling cell behavior. His research at Stanford, between 1987 and 1992, revealed that the cell environment, which operated via the cell membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, turning genes on and off. This discovery ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by genes, and gave rise to one of today’s most important fields of study: the science of epigenetics. Epigenetics researches how the cell environment controls cell functioning. As Lipton discovered, the cell environment is highly susceptible to be influenced by our thoughts and emotions, revealing that consciousness is in no small part responsible for our biological functioning.

Conversations with Other Thinkers

Iain McGilchrist, Ph.D.

Iain McGilchrist is a psychiatrist, neuroscience researcher, philosopher and literary scholar. In 2009 he rose to worldwide fame with his bestselling book “The Master and His Emissary”, in which he provided scientific evidence that the left and right brain hemispheres represent two fundamentally different ways of experiencing the world. Although My Big TOE posits that all cognitive processes take place within consciousness, not the brain, it draws on the “left brain / right brain” metaphor to illustrate the difference between an intellectual-analytic and an intuitive-holistic way of approaching the world.

Stephan A. Schwartz

Scientist, futurist, and award-winning author Stephan A. Schwartz is the columnist for the journal “Explore”, and editor of the daily Schwartzreport.net. He currently holds academic and research appointments at the Distinguished Consulting Faculty of Saybrook University and as a Research Associate of the Cognitive Sciences Laboratory of the Laboratories for Fundamental Research.

Schwartz is the author of more than 130 technical reports and papers, 20 academic book chapters and multiple trade books, including “The Secret Vaults of Time”. The acknowledged classic in its field covers 100 years of worldwide research on the use of remote viewing in archaeology. Other books include “The Alexandria Project”, “Mind Rover”, “Opening to the Infinite”, and “The 8 Laws of Change”, winner of the 2016 Nautilus Book Award for Social Change.

Having studied the nature of consciousness for more than 50 years, Schwartz is one of the founders of modern remote viewing research. He has also written and produced multiple television and film projects. Tom Campbell and Schwartz share the concept from their combined decades of research that consciousness is fundamental to reality.

Schwartz’s prior academic appointments include: Senior Samueli Fellow for Brain, Mind and Healing of the Samueli Institute; BIAL Fellow; founder and Research Director of the Mobius laboratory; Executive Director of the Rhine Research Center; and Senior Fellow of The Philosophical Research Society. Government appointments include: Special Assistant for Research and Analysis to the Chief of Naval Operations, consultant to the Oceanographer of the Navy.

July 2022

Bernardo Kastrup, Ph.D.

Bernardo Kastrup has earned Ph.D. degrees in both computer science and philosophy. A firm opponent of reductionist materialism, he has developed a metaphysical view he calls “analytic idealism”. Like My Big TOE, it holds that consciousness is the fundamental substrate of reality. The two models slightly differ in the details, though, some of which Tom Campbell and Bernardo Kastrup discuss in this conversation.

Rupert Spira

Rupert Spira is a spritual teacher who trained in the classical system of Advaita, or non-duality. Spira summarizes one of the core insights of his teachings as follows: “The greatest discovery in life is that our essential nature does not share the limits or the destiny of the body and mind.”

Collaborations

Bernard Haisch

Astrophysicist and author

Tom is collaborating with Bernard Haisch on finding ways to bring other physicists to the understanding that consciousness is the fundamental reality.

Bernard Haisch is an astrophysicist and author of more than 130 scientific publications. He worked for twenty years at the Lockheed Martin Technology Center in Palo Alto, California. He was a scientific editor of the “Astrophysical Journal” for ten years. Haisch has been deputy director of the Center for EUV Astrophysics, the University of California at Berkeley, and visiting scientist at Max Planck Institute in Garching, Germany. He was also a visiting scientist at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, in addition to holding the office of President of the Digital Universe Foundation for a decade, and a former director of the California Institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Palo Alto.

Haisch is also an author of books based on science and spirituality: “The Miracle of Our Universe”, “The God Theory”, “The Purpose Guided Universe”, “Proof of God”, and “Your Guaranteed Ticket to Heaven”.

He is currently the Chief Science Officer at Jovion Corporation. Jovion is a clean technology company working on an approach which could bring affordable energy to homes and places of business from a new, effectively unlimited energy source, based on the Casimir-Lamb shift.

Haisch and Tom Campbell see eye to eye on the theory that consciousness is fundamental to reality. Haisch supports Tom’s model of a Larger Consciousness System, the One Source of which we are a part, which Bernard would call God.

Inspired by My Big TOE, Haisch published an academic article entitled “Is the Universe a Vast, Consciousness-Created Virtual Reality Simulation?” (“Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy”, vol. 10, no. 1, 2014)
