Belief occurs when you really want to know but do not have the facts – you simply believe you know.

If you want to know, or fear not knowing, and are unable or unwilling to discover sufficient facts, a belief fixes that problem for you – it also greatly reduces the possibility of ever finding out the truth. Once the belief is made, information conflicting with the belief is easily discounted, disregarded and ignored.

Belief is a key tool employed by the ego to cover up any fears we cannot or do not want to deal with. Belief meets a need for certainty where no certainty exists. It creates the soothing illusion that one doesn’t have to deal with a specific question or problem because the answer has apparently already been found.

If one is unaware of the fears underlying one’s beliefs, one is usually also unaware of the beliefs designed by the ego to hide those fears. Thus, one takes one’s beliefs for facts, being under the illusion that one has knowledge when one does not.

Importantly, beliefs are not merely about religious, spiritual or metaphysical matters. There also exist all sorts of cultural, social, personal and even scientific beliefs. For instance, the idea that science and the scientific method are the only valid way to investigate reality is not supported by facts – and yet it is a widely-held assumption, not only among scientists.

Disbelief is another form of belief.

Belief and disbelief are the opposite of open-minded skepticism. Open-minded skepticism requires the ability to live gracefully with uncertainty, which, in turn, requires either fearlessness or courage.
